Placing the loaded flannel (with ink reservoir) on the brass pens

The Shaw pen ruling machine was used to produce copy books and ledgers. The machine is mainly made from wood and brass as the inks used are corrosive. The first machine was developed in 1826, Paris, France.

Carriages holds the brass pens, upon which loaded or soaked flannel which holds the reservoir of ink is placed on top. The machine can rule 1,000 sheets in 30mins.

It is possible to produce certain fixed patterns of lines on the sheets of paper and for more complex and elaborate lined paper designs (e.g. accountancy or stock books), the sheets of paper pass through the machine several times. Two people are required to operate this machine - a machine feeder (feeding in sheets of paper) and the printer.
